Nokia to start service in Japan together with DoCoMo

Nokia isn’t exactly one of the most popular cellphone companies in Japan. In fact, they only have a 1% market share and most of the phones that you actually see in the stores are adapted versions of the “normal” nokia phones you would find in the rest of the world. It seems that Nokia is aware of the fact that they need to do something about this because their current strategy just doesn’t seem to improve their popularity in Japan.
Reuters reports that the service that they are going pair up with market leading operator NTT DoCoMo and that it is going to be a “mobile virtual network operator” kind of service. This is perhaps similar to what other companies are doing with DoCoMo, for instance EMobile that offers wireless internet connectivity and mobile phone service by partially roaming in DoCoMo’s network. According to Reuters, Nokia will first offer the service with high-end models to establish a strong brand. Perhaps we will be able to see some new interesting Nokia models on the Japanese market in the future?
Whether or not Nokia will be able to compete with the current big players in Japan like NEC and Toshiba, only time will tell. In any case, it might just prove a to be the good first step into the Japanese market that Nokia needs. But at least for awhile I don’t think there is much stopping NEC’s and the other big vendors’ grip on the high tech handsets in Japan. Check out this dreamy piece of technology from NEC:
